A different venue had been chosen for the underground fight that night. Anticipating an increased crowd, Toni McVay had decreed this match be held in a larger building and, as usual, she was right. The place was packed, everyone eagerly putting on their bets. They weren’t just here for the MacGregors. Callum Young was a big name in the underground fight scene, having only lost once and that was just because he’d been told by Toni to take a dive. Callum was as hard as nails and the odds were split right down the middle between him and Virgil.

Terry was not at all happy about Virgil getting back into the ring and he glared at him, muscular arms folded across his thick barrel chest.

‘I want you to know that I’m doing this under protest,’ Terry told Virgil. ‘If it was up to me, I’d throw you out of here heid first, but someone much more powerful than me says you’re in, so I’ve nae choice. But just know that if you lose the plot like you did before then I will make it my personal mission to see you crippled for life. Do you fucking get it?’

Virgil nodded contritely. ‘I do and I don’t blame you, Terry.’

‘Aye, well,’ said Terry, a little disappointed that he hadn’t got the argument he’d been hoping for. ‘Just fucking watch it. Now get ready. The fight starts in five minutes,’ he added before striding off to bark orders at his subordinates.

‘You can do this,’ James told him. ‘You just need to tap into that rage.’

‘What if I do and I nearly kill Callum like I did Mark?’

‘Callum’s a much better fighter,’ Warren told him. ‘You’re a lot more evenly matched. That was the problem with that fight – Mark wasnae in your league. Terry was mad to put him in the ring with you.’

‘That’s true,’ said Morgan. ‘Callum’s a real threat to you but you’ve got to win. If you don’t, our family will look like losers.’

‘So no pressure then,’ muttered Virgil, pulling off his jacket and jumper and handing them to James.

Some of the crowd standing closest to Virgil noted the change in his physique and hastily switched their bets to Callum while those already betting on Callum smiled, pleased with their very wise decision. Others noticed the scratches down Virgil’s back left by Ember’s nails and grinned.

‘For God’s sake, make sure you take him down,’ Newton told Virgil.

‘Thanks for that,’ he retorted. ‘I hadnae thought of it myself,’ he added before reluctantly climbing into the ring and holding his hands out to Terry’s lackey to be bandaged.

‘Please tell me you’ve got one of your sly tricks up your sleeve to piss him off?’ James quietly asked Newton.

‘Nope, nothing,’ he replied.

‘You’ve always been able to wind him up and the one time we really need you to do it you won’t?’ he said, arching an eyebrow.

‘It’s his own fault. If he hadnae lost the plot last night, I’d be the one in the ring and he’d be standing here, so sod him.
